Yes it makes sense, and I am thrilled to report that I got accomplished what I have been trying to do since I bought my ipad. I can't believe I was just not getting this. I guess it takes a hammer to my head sometimes to get through to me! Thanks for all your patience and putting up with me.

HI Patti,

How you have output set depends on what you want to see on your braille
display. It has no effect on what you type or how what you type is translated.
And whether auto-translation is on or not is irrelevant if you're using
uncontracted 8-dot braille because there is no translation when you use that
setting. The only thing auto-translation does is, if you type some text and
haven't pressed Space or Enter, if it's on, the text will be translated after a
couple of seconds. If it's off, the text will only be translated if you press
Space, Enter, or Space with dots 4-5. I hope that makes sense.

Best,
Anna

Hi Anna. I swear on my life, it is the first time I saw those words auto
translation, just now.
I promise I'm not making that up. I turned it on and chose 8 dot for my
display output. Should I have screen input the same?
I am so sorry to be such a stupe.

Hi Patti,

Go to Settings/General/VoiceOver/Braille.

Choose Braille Display Input.

Your choices should be Uncontracted 6-dot braille (which is Grade 1 braille),
uncontracted 8-dot brialle (which is computer braille, with no translation),
and Contracted Braille (which is translated braille, using UEB or English Grade
2 or whichever code you've chosen). The final choice on this screen is
Automatic Braille Translation. It is dimmed if you've chosen uncontracted 8-dot
braille.

For typing in a login, you're probably best off if you choose uncontracted
8-dot braille and type the login using computer braille. That way, there's no
translation involved. Once you have a feel for how translation works, you can
use it and contracted braille in any edit field.

I hope that's of some help.

Best,
Anna

Thanks, Anna, but again, I don't see where it gives you the option to turn it
off or on, I don't see the words auto translation.
I am looking at Braille input. Under translation it just give me english ueb
and united kingom. Should I be looking somewhere else, should I do something
first to see where it says something about Auto translation? I am sorry to
appear so dense, but I have had nothing but trouble since the updates, getting
input to work on My Focus, no matter which input I use.
I wonder if it's the display itself, but it worked before. I even put my typing keyboard
on "nothing". I am still not getting anywhere, especiall using my Ipad. What
I want to do is enter my creditentials for xm and I could do it on the phone, but not on
the ipad, and both have the most recent updates.
Could it be that app doesn't work on the ipad any more?
I'm jsut frustrated, I'm sorry.

Hi Patti,

The auto-translation setting is in the Braille Display Input section of Braille
settings. If you turn it on, it works anytime you are using a braille input
mode that involves translation, i.e., contracted and six-dot.

Best,
Anna

But I'm not seeing any setting for auto translation, all I see is english,
united kingdom english and ueb.
I don't see anywhere it says auto translation.
If I have it set to English, would the at and period symbols be dot 4 and 46
respectively?
so do I hit the space bar or space bar dots 4 5, because I can't figure out if
its set to auto.
I am sorry to be so dense but I swear I don't see that anywhere.

Hi Patty.
If you have auto translation set to off, to translate the text before
hitting the space bar, press space with dots 4-5. How to enter the @
symbol depends on which table you are using for braille translation.
with UEB, it's dot 4 and then dot 1.

Thanks, Scott, that is what i did, but didn't find continuous or
whatever it says. But I guess it works. The other problem I am having
is when I put in my password and then hit space, it gives it an extra
character. and no matter which output I use, when i try to put in the
at sign and period on my email address it gives it different symbols,
and extra letters. I f eel so stupid, why can't I do this right?
