A little late on this, but wanted to share an ap. I heard of an app some time ago called Carrier Compare, which is free and shows the difference in carrier data speeds based on your location. I don't have an iTunes link but if you search for Carrier Compare in the App Store you will find it. Regarding the carrier to choose, I would recommend T-Mobile. I'm not in CA but T-Mobile offers lower prices to AT&T. My wife and I were with AT&T and used my work discount to bring the price down to around $170 per month for phone and data service. With T-Mobile, I can't use a work discount, but I'm still paying around $175 for the same thing. Actually, T-Mobile offers much better data plans than AT&T since T-Mobile will roll over data month to month up to 12 months, unlike AT&T which will only roll over 2 months before you lose the data. We get 10 gigs of data plus 10 gigs of data stash per month, which basically means that we've got unlimited data since we're never going to use all that. My wife does a lot of gaming and streaming and she has gotten up to 1 or 2 gigs in a month. I stream the radio and some videos, but also do downloading of books and apps, and my top data amount has been less than a gig. Plus, we have the option of upgrading or changing phones three times for free per year.
