Jenny, For me the number in front of the Podcast indicates the number of unplayed Podcasts while they are downloading. For example, I just opened the Podcast app and it said this when I tapped on the "My Podcasts" tab:
1 Applevis Podcast, 1 unplayed episode As soon as it finished downloading the 1 in front went away and it just said "Applevis Podcast, 1 unplayed episode". I just turned off downloading for my Podcasts to see if next time there is a new episode of a Podcast that number in front will be there and stay there which I assume may be the case if you aren't downloading the Podcasts.
