There is certainly nothing new here. For as long as I can remember, one has needed to enable hints to get the preview lines read when flicking from message to message in Mail. It is very interesting that this subject has surfaced as I was just having a conversation with someone about this last week. I have placed hints in the rotor since the only time I really need to enable/disable hints is for Mail and to deal with this particular issue. Otherwise I prefer to keep hints disabled.
