Hi Jim, Larry recently mentioned that he uses Blindsquare exactly for that purpose. It is, however, a bit of an expensive app, but it does offer a bunch more very good and useful features when you are walking around and want some feedback about where you are, upcoming cross streets etc. If your friends wants something less expensive he could try My Way Classic, I believe there is a free version available.

I think I remember an ap being mentioned before that would assist with navigating in an open space, so that you could mark your start point, drop markers along the way, and then be able to get back to your original start point. A friend is moving to a new apartment complex, and will have to travel across a large open area in order to leave his garbage out each week, and then will probably most likely want to get back home!
