So, I kind of have a lot of questions about recording music using an
iPhone. The Yamaha keyboards I've been looking at have some impressive
sounds. I would like to know if there's a way to connect the keyboard
with my iPhone and have the keyboard's sound be recorded, not another
sound from the app being used to create the music, such as Garage
Band--I mean recording, for example, the flute sound that comes with
the keyboard. The reason I ask this is because a few of the keyboards
have soundpacks that you can download and add to the keyboard via
special cards or some such, and if I'm paying for those soundpacks,
I'd like to be able to record them with my iPhone. And I'd like to get
a cleaner sound by hooking the iPhone up to the keyboard directly,
preferably not via the headphone jack, as I've heard that can produce
less-than good results, and not by placing the phone next to the
keyboard and using an app like DropVox. Can using some kind of MIDI
interface between the phone and keyboard accomplish what I want? I
know almost nothing about MIDI, so I'm not even sure if I'm on the
right track.

Would there also be a way to record instruments that are provided by
Garage band, and just use the keyboard to play them, instead of
recording the sounds that come with the keyboard? That's kind of the
opposite of what I want to do in the above paragraph.

If I'm recording the sound of the keyboard with my iPhone, will I be
able to still hear the keyboard through its speakers or plugged in
headphones, so I can get immediate feedback about mistakes I might
make? Same question goes for recording instruments that come with
Garage band while just using the keyboard to play them.

What would be a good recording app for this purpose? Eventually, I'd
like to be able to record multiple tracks, for having different
instruments, and then put them all together to make a song.

I'm a very long ways away from doing any of thes--but I'd like to know
some of these things, so I can make a more informed decision when
shopping for a keyboard.

And on that note, for people who've gotten keyboards to do what I'm
wanting to do, how do you find all the menus on them? Are they still
using actual buttons, or have they all gone to (most-likely)
inaccessible touchscreens? Are their manuals that lay out the menu
structures in detail? Or manuals that give you a good idea of the
physical layout?

Thanks,
Ari
