FYI, 85 decibels is the cutoff used by OSHA for acceptable continuous noise for 8 hours. For one hour, the cutoff is 94 decibels. Note this is for continuous noise. Although loud music is significantly higher than 94 decibels, it may not be considered continuous. I also saw some articles that said OSHA in the US is lagging a bit behind the rest of the world when it came to hearing protection and decibel guidelines in the work place. You may want to do a bit of research and Googling yourself before approaching the owner of your gym, just to make sure you've got all of your ducks in a row and a strong case to make.
