I believe DND is far better solution. If you set Airplane mode than you're loosing Internet connection and maybe some background refreshing for certain apps and getting of SMS, iMessages and e-mail. If you re-enable WiFi in the Airplane mode anyone can call you using Facetime or any other VoIP service. In fact, this was happening with Viber some time ago, not sure about the WhatsApp or FB Messenger.
