I assume air plane mode is the turning off of all of the phone's radios, bluetooth, cellular, wifi, GPS and so on. Based on the message below, I'm guessing you can turn on air plane mode, which would turn off all of the radios on the phone and then selectively go in and just turn on the radios you want on, such as wifi. I've never tried it myself though.
