Yes, I think this would work. I'll just have to remember after the meeting that I toggled off VoiceOver. I wouldn't be surprised if I forget the first few times and reset my phone thinking VoiceOver was hung.

Ideally, I'd like VoiceOver to respect the mute switch for all automatic notifications. I'd still like VoiceOver to talk to me when I'm actually interacting with the phone, even if the mute switch is on.

Wouldn't this do what you describe below as desirable?

I always wanted the mute switch, when activated, to turn off all sounds
generated by alerts and notifications, including VoiceOver, and this is how it
worked for me for a very short period of time, maybe a few months with IOS 7.
I'm not sure how Apple intended this to work though, and I've always found it
to be inconsistent. This has always been a bit frustrating for me since I want
to have my phone on in meetings, so I can step out when I get a notification
that I'm expecting, but still have it silent so it doesn't interrupt the
meeting. I also want to be able to toggle this behavior on and off and not have
to go down a settings tree to find this switch. I must admit that after a year
or so of not being able to figure out what combination of settings would get me
the behavior I wanted, even through IOS updates, I kind of gave up trying, and
I think I need to go back and give Ari's suggestion another chance.

notifications but not be alerted by them is to mute the sounds from
the phone, and also do a 3 finger double tap on the screen. This will
mute speech. This way, you still get notifications but they aren't
spoken and no sound comes through. I use this a lot when taking a nap
or in a movie. I still get all my notices but only have to worry about
the vibrations coming through. This would be an option if you did not
want to turn Do Not Disturb on but you wanted to not be alerted by
voice or sound when getting a notification. Perhaps there is no one
perfect solution in this situation.

Alan, if I understand your message correctly, you want to have
VoiceOver not speak notifications, but get a vibration when you
receive one and your mute switch is turned on. If this is the case,
you want to turn off the setting called always speak notifications in
settings/general/accessibility/VoiceOver.

Regina,

FYI, my iPhone 6 running iOS 9.3.4 is often inconsistent with
announcing notifications when I have my phone muted. It seems like
the quieter it is in a meeting when I have the phone muted that
VoiceOver blasts out the notification. It is supposed to vibrate
when a notification comes in and the phone is muted but I'm also experiencing
your issue inconsistently.

I tried muting my phone on a phone call. I still got notifications.
Reading this article I am led to believe it will stop notifications
and only vibrate if enabled. I think I am having brain block about
these features. [smiles)

Do not disturb and the mute switch are a bit different. Mute
silences the sounds from your phone and is on until you switch it off.

Do not disturb can be set up on a schedule, and it can be
customized, so for example, you can have the phone ring if anyone in
your favorites calls you but not otherwise. You can also have calls
go through if their from the same person and you get three of them in a short
period of time.

Here's an article that explains the difference:

Hi Alan,

This is a good tip; but I would like to know, is this doing
something different from just use of the “mute” switch by the volume arrows?

Thanks,

Regina,

I'm a bit unclear whether you got your sounds back from your update
but I will say there is an easy way to turn Do Not Disturb on and off:

1. Place focus on the top line of the screen such as on the time or
other item there.

2. Do a 3-finger swipe up to open the control center.

3. Single finger swipe right until do not disturb is announced and
double tap to turn it on or off as needed.

4. Use the scrub gesture to close the control center.

OK, here is my update on sounds. This might help someone else when
checking through and doing all the things that could be wrong.

I have been desperate to find a way to stop notifications when I am
on the phone and especially when reading. I decided to try do not disturb.
You cannot just turn do not disturb on and off. I entered it and
turned on manual and then at the bottom under heading silent selected always.
The thought that I might have do not disturb on persuaded me to check.
Um, forgot to switch it back to schedule and from always to on
locked screen. Thank you for that possibility! I sure wish Apple
would give an on and off to notifications. It would be my most
needed improvement!
