Now that I have explored what Jan suggested, I have to agree with her. If you go to settings, privacy, location services, swipe down to system services & tap to open. Here you will find system services that use your location. Turn off those services that you don't trackingg your every move. Here you also have the option to not have the system service icon displayed in the status bar.
I have app background refresh on. I have switched on the system service icon then turned background refresh off & the icon still remains in the status bar.
