I am not clear what your ultimate goal is for deleting messages. For this discussion, I will only consider 2 devices, a computer, and an iPhone.
There are 2 different email protocols. The IMAP protocol used by Gmail and others essentially keeps all of your email folders and messages on the mail server. When you delete an email from 1 device, it is deleted from all devices since it actually resides at the provider's server. The older email protocol is POP3 which downloads the email messages to your device. I do not know which email protocol Verizon supports, but I expect you use POP3 protocol based on your questions. The rest of this discussion talks about the POP3 protocol. You first need to decide which device you consider to be your primary device for reading and saving email. For example, I primarily use my computer for email. I have my computer set to delete email messages from the provider's server when I download the message to my computer. I have set my iPhone to never delete email messages from the provider's server. So when I am away from my computer, I can check email on the phone. When I open my email client from the computer, all of the messages (including the ones I saw on the phone) download to the PC and are deleted from the provider's server. I quickly delete the ones I have already read unless it is a message I wanted to save for later use. Here is how to change what happens to an email message on your iPhone. Double tap Settings. Scroll down and double tap "Mail, Contacts, and Calendars". This will probably be on the second page. Under the Accounts heading, locate your email address, and double tap it. Swipe up with 3 fingers to scroll down the list of mail settings. Double tap the "Advanced" button. Under the "INCOMING SETTINGS" heading, find the "Delete From Server" button. You have 3 choices for when to delete mail from the server. Your choices are: · Never · 7 Days · When removed from Inbox Double tap the one you want. Double tap the "Back" button In the upper left corner of the screen to go back to the "Advanced" settings page. Double tap the "Back" button in the upper left corner of the screen again to go back to the settings for your email account. Double tap the "done" button in the upper right corner of the screen to save the changes you made. If you don't want to save any changes, double tap the "Cancel" button in the upper left corner of the screen. I hope this helps. You may have to experiment with different settings on both your computer and phone to determine what works best for you. My server is Verizon. I also use the same email address on my computer. Even after deleting them from my computer they keep reappearing in my mail inbox. Does anyone have any ideas what is going on? Thanks in advance for any help. Martin Nelson -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list.
