You have to take the phone away from the ear, wait a second or two and then put it back up to your face before it usually switches back to the earpiece. Of course if you are in a public place this can be annoying since usually the other party can't hear you right away and keeps asking what's going on. In my opinion this is not a hardware issue since this happened on my 6S Plus which was just replaced under warranty and the new phone has the exact same issue. This replacement phone was also set up as a new phone and was not restored from a backup. I seem to remember that this started happening when I started to use Ios 10 and so far it continues to happen almost 100% of the time, from time to time I make a call and it does not happen. At the same time if I start a call and then put the phone to my face and take it away or put my hand over the top of the phone and then take it away to trigger the audio to go to speakerphone, the call usually reverts to the earpiece when somebody answers so the issues seems to go both ways.
