Hello. I use Alex as my primary voice, along with the Tom high quality voice on my iPhone 7. Though I mostly use Alex, I was impressed by how clear and a touch louder the Tom voice was on the phone. I haven't had any trouble understanding Tom, but there are probably differences in what you can hear and what I can hear. I should say too that I can understand Tom with or without my hearing aids in. I typically find the Compact voices to be more muffled, but as I say your milage may vary.
