Hi Keith,

As part of the USB protocol definition, the device needing power must specify
to the device providing the power, how much power it needs. The device
providing power is only allowed to provide the minimum of what it can provide
with its electronics, what the device asked for, and the maximum the USB/B
specification allows.

I think the difference (if nothing else) is that the USB/C specification allows
for a higher maximum.

Thanks Sieghard.

I wonder what, if anything, about the standard USB plug renders it
unsatisfactory for the Fast Charge process.

Looks just like a regular Lightning cable except that the regular USB end which
normally plugs into a wall charger or your computer’s USB port now is replaced
by a USB-C plug which is much smaller, more like the Lightning end in size and
it is also reversable, i.e. you can plug it in ether way.

Obviously a USB-C power adapter would have a matching female port to accept the
smaller USB-C plug. Here is what Apple says on their website, in Canada the
cable is 35.00 CAD:

Connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod with Lightning connector to your USB-C– or
Thunderbolt 3 (USB‑C)–enabled Mac for syncing and charging.

You can also use this cable with your Apple 29W, 61W or 87W USB-C Power Adapter
to charge your iOS device, and even take advantage of the fast-charging

feature on iPad Pro, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.

Compatible with the following computers:

12-inch MacBook, 13-inch MacBook Pro - Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C), 15-inch MacBook
Pro - Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)

21.5-inch iMac - Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C), 27-inch iMac - Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)

Here is what it says on the Apple website about the 3 available power adapters
mentioned above, clearly if you already own a newer MacBook I think you would
already have either the 61 Watt or 87 Watt power adapter and you can use that
with one of the new iPhones, but if not and yu want to take advantage of fast
charging for your new iPhone X or 8 or 8 Plus then the 29 Watt power adapter is
the one you want to get.

In let’s say 4 or 5 years or so when most people have an iPhone 8 or above this
of course will be much more relevant although then we of course also may not
charge with a cable very much any more at all.

29 Watt: 49.99 CAD

The Apple 29W USB-C Power Adapter offers fast, efficient charging at home, in
the office or on the go. While the power adapter is compatible with any
USB-C–enabled

device, Apple recommends pairing it with your iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, or
iPhone X to take advantage of the fast-charging feature.

USB-C to Lightning Cable sold separately.

61 Watt: 89.00 CAD

The 61W USB-C Power Adapter offers fast, efficient charging at home, in the
office or on the go. While this power adapter is compatible with any
USB-C–enabled

device, Apple recommends pairing it with your 13-inch MacBook Pro with
Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports for optimal charging performance.

USB-C Charge Cable sold separately.

87 Watt: 99 CAD

The 87W USB-C Power Adapter offers fast, efficient charging at home, in the
office or on the go. While this power adapter is compatible with any
USB-C–enabled

device, Apple recommends pairing it with your 15-inch MacBook Pro with
Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports for optimal charging performance.

USB-C Charge Cable sold separately.

Using an iPad wall adapter which puts out 12 Watts of power does speed up
charging of a regular iPhone up to the 7 and 7 Plus over the 5 Watt adapter
that comes with the iPhone, but it is not fast charging.

True Fast charging technology is only available on the new 2017 iPhones, the 8,
8 Plus and iPhone X and as was pointed out previously, it requires the USB-C to
Lightning cable and the correct adapter.

I chatted with Apple Support, where they informed me that they were not sure if
it was included. If not, it would require the 29W USB-C Mac power adapter and
usb-C to lightning cable.

I'll wait until there is 3P one for a portable charger or a stand/pad...

Hello,

I am pretty sure that it will speed up charging on any iPhones, but probably
not to the same extent... Plugging the iPhone into an iPad charger improves
charging time significantly.

Is this fast charging available only on the 2017 iPhones? Or, will it work on
earlier iPhones if one gets the USB-C to lightning cable?

You need a different cable as far as I know for Apple fast charging, I believe

I have a multi port charger made by Choetech that supposedly has two fast
charging ports. I'm not sure which of the six ports they are or quite how to
tell, they just charge my other things normally. But with the new Iphones, can
I buy an adaptor of some sort to use this charge for fast charging them. All of
the ports themselves look like standard USB ports.
