What I've taken to doing is using Tom for VoiceOver and Samantha for VoiceDream. (I don't care much for the Neo Speech voices.)

I have hearing losss and quite like the Alex voice on my iPHONE7. It's the
best compromise between responsiveness and enjoyability and I use it for
reading books quite a lot. However, in some backgrounds where I really need
the voice to cut through for me, I prefer the Australian Karen voice. An
old but reliable companion. The American Ava voice is also reasonably
pleasant.

I think people were really looking forward to Alex because on the Mac he
does sound quite a bit better. Also, for some people with hearing loss I
understand Alex can be better than other voices.
I also still use Eloquence with Jaws although occasionally may switch to
a
voice like Samantha or Nathan if I want to read a longer article or piece
of
text slowly. All of the human sounding voices in my opinion don't sound
good
when they speak fast. The new female SIRI voice on the uiPhone is a good
example. I think it sounds awesome, maybe the best TTS I have heard
except
maybe Alexa on the Echo, but she definitely does not sound good if you go
faster than her default.
Larry is correct, voices are super subjective, some for example prefer to
use the compact iOS voice and think it sounds better than the high
quality
one and I just don't hear it that way, to me the high quality is much
better.

Sieghard

I agree; Eloquence is still my favorite and I haven't found anything to
replace it. I actually find the "human" sounding voices to sound really
weird.

The subject pretty much says it all. I've tried using his voice a
number of times, and it sounds weirdly robotic and muffled to me. Not
appealing at all. What is the appeal for people, since it was such a
big
deal when it was added?
