I would assume that the signals being sent from the keyboard to the computer are all generated the same way and follow the same standard protocol. Basically, the only difference would be the key caps. Therefore, they're pretty much interchangeable. Here's just one of many articles on using a Windows keyboard on a Mac and the other way around https://www.computer-hardware-explained.com/apple-keyboard.html

Hi,

The original question came from someone who has a Windows Bluetooth keyboard and was trying to figure out what keys she would use if connected to an iPhone.

I have the AmazonBasics keyboard and had recommended it because of having both options and control on both sides of the spacebar.

But, it hasn’t been available for at least 6 months, so I switched to the Logitech K480 since it can connect to three Bluetooth devices including Windows or Android along with Apple.

I will leave it to that person to finally sort out what keys on a Windows keyboard match up to the Apple keyboard commands.

*Hi Richard,*

*I use a BATTOP keyboard from Amazon, & it doesn't have an application key / context menu key.  Here's my bottom row key layout.*

*My bottom row from left to right:**
*Left Function key, Control, Options / Alt, Command, Spacebar, Command, Options / Alt, Up / down / left / right Arrow keys.**

*I don't know what key would be the application / context menu key using this keyboard being I've never used it with a Windows computer.  Also I don't know if iOS has an equivalent to the Windows context menu, unless it's the Rotor.***

*
Systems switch between Android, Windows and iOS *

*QWERTY Keyboard Layout:**
*Press:” Fn” +” Q” for iOS *
*Press:” Fn” + ” W ”for Android *
*Press:” Fn” +” E ” for Windows **

*AZERTY keyboard Layout:**
*Press: ” Fn” +” A” for Android *
*Press: ” Fn” +” Z ”for Windows *
*Press: ” Fn” +” E ”for iOS **

Take care.  Mike.  Go Dodgers!

OK,

I of course new that control+options was the VO key.

But to make sure we are all on the same page:

Windows key equals command key

Application key equals Options

And Control equals control.

Is that correct?

*The keys for VO are, the control and option keys (held down together) on an Apple keyboard, and ** *the control and alt keys (held down together) on a Windows style keyboard.**

* The command key on an Apple keyboard corresponds to the Windows key on a Windows style keyboard.*

Hi Lois,

Nothing to be ashamed of.  We all have to learn somehow.

To show my ignorance as well, I am not completely  sure I have the right information on which Windows keys are what when used with an Apple device.

My best guess is that the control key is the same.

The options key would be the Windows Key.

And The application key would be the command key.

If the Windows keyboard has a function key, it would be the same.

I’m sure there is a list out there with a list of which Windows keys equal which Apple keys.

I know there are others on the list that can answer once they see these messages.

HTH,

Richard

Okay, showing my ignorance here, by regular keyboard I mean not an Apple keyboard.  I’m not aware of an options key on other than an apple keyboard. I thought the keys were Control, Function or vice versa, windows, and alt, with applications key on the right side as well.

I’m sure I’m going to feel like a fool, but please explain.

Thanks,

Lois

Lois,

VO is control plus options not control plus command.

I do not know what you mean by a regular keyboard?

My question is, if VO means control plus command, which doesn’t exist on a regular keyboard, what do you press instead.

Thanks,

Lois

According to the latest iOS 11 Keyboard commands from the Apple user guide, Function Key plus VO, plus n opens the notification center.

I have tried with both the Logitech k480 and the AmazonBasics keyboard and it doesn’t work.

I do not have access to an Apple Wireless keyboard.  I wonder if it works with it?

Thanks,

Richard
