Hi Flor,

It is only the first digit which determines card type, Anna correctly pointed
this out, 4=Visa and 5=Mastercard. There is of course more information hidden
in a card number for those who know how to read it. For example, if with a
Mastercard number the second number is a 1, then the second and third digit
identifies the bank, if the second number is a 2, then digits 2, 3 and 4 are
the bank identifier and if it’s a 4 then digits 2, 3, 4 and 5 are said
identifier. My Mastercard starts with a “55” and in this case digits 2 through
5 are the bank identifier.
With Mastercard all other digits after that except for the last one are the
actual account number and the last digit is what is called a check digit.
The only cards where the first 2 numbers are required to know what card type it
is are those which start with a 3, American Express, Diners Club and Carte
Blanche. American Express cards always start with “37” and I think now some
start with “34”, if the first two are 30, 36 or 38 it’s a Diners Club or Carte
Blanche.
There is an online “BIN” (Bank Identification Number) database where you can
type in a card number and it will give you the issueing bank, issueing country
and so on, but it has a captcha which only a sighted person can solve and
beyond 12 inquiries it’s a paid system.

I haven’t ever come across one of those yet, but I believe Mastercard has
introduced a new BIN (Bank Identification Number) which starts with “2”, this
is based on an email I received last year:

Dear Valued Merchant,
Effective October 14, 2016, MasterCard is introducing a new series of Bank
Identification Numbers (BINs) that begin with "2" (e.g. 222100-272099).
This BIN series will help to support the expanding payment industry and growing
number of cardholders globally.

I guess it’s just a matter of time until it was or will again be necessary for
these systems to be expanded just as where there used to be one area code often
for an entire state or canadian province there are now multiple area codes to
support the growing numbers required for cell phones, Voip lines and all that.
It will be interesting to see when our current system of a 3-digit area code
followed by a 7-digit phone number will not be enough any more to provide the
amount of numbers required and maybe 4-digit area codes start to show up or
instead of a 7-digit number there will then be 9 or 10-digit numbers.

Regards,
Sieghard

No, it does not mean that. The first digits on the card tell a computer or card
network what type the card is. If a card number begins with 54, it’s a
MasterCard. If a card number begins with 45, it’s a Visa. These are known to
the computer, etc. I i know what my card type is, and I know I have the number
typed in correcly. (Incidentally my card doesn’t yet support ApplePay.)

Subject: Message: Credit card number does not match credit card type.

Hi,

I’m attempting to set up my payment info in the App Store for my first free
download of an app on this iPhone 6s, having verified my fingerprint ID and
entered my password when asked. (This is for a free app, but ‘verification is
required’ probably as it’s my first download on this iPhone from the App Store.
The 16-digit Credit card number, CVV, and Expiry Date, are correct.

So, what does, “Credit card number does not match credit card type” mean? Does
it mean, that I must contact my card provider to proceed anyway? Or, does it
mean something else? Or does it signify something else entirely unrelated? Or,
does it mean that I should simply try PayPal and hope it works? (When I/my Bank
changed from Visa to MasterCard, iTunes/App Store had accepted that in the past
and I made purchases using the latter card type.)

Any good ideas? Thanks.
