The speaker phone works as I would expect it to work on my iphone 7. When I
hold the phone away from my ear for a second or two, the speaker comes on and
goes off if I replace the phone to my ear.

As Richard suggested, just disable the automatic switching in Voiceover
Settings > Audio.

I don’t agree with the statement that the phone part of the iPhone is the worst
part and I would never carry some cheapo flip phone just to make phone calls,
this would mean having two cell contracts since I assume these people would
still want to have service on the iPhone for texting and so on.

I might agree if somebody has physical issues which make it difficult to use
the touch screen, but for people who have normal use of their hands I think
it’s just practice.

The phone is the worst part of the iPhone. i seldom take or make calls on my
iPhone. In fact, I know some folks who have a cheap cell phone that they use
for calls and they use their iPhone for the other neat stuff you can do.

Hi Marie,

I had this same problem with my iPhone SE, and IOS 9,and since I can't stand
speaker phones anyway,

I went into settings and disabled the ability to use speaker phone.

and I use only headphones

You might want to give this a try!

In my opinion, the iPhone is the worst cell phone I have ever had,

but it is a great portable hand-held computer.

HTH,

Rick

Subject: Speaker phone issue

I have an IPhone seven which goes to speaker phone when my ear is up against
the phone and it is happening all too often. I have spoken to Apple and they
are aware of the problem but have no solution. It is nerve racking and actually
hurts my ear. Is there any possibility of lowering the volume of the speaker
phone before it damages the only ear which still has hearing?

Marie
