With my hearing aids, I need to use either over the ear headphones or the ear
buds. The ear pods are hard and won't share my ear with my hearing aids like
the buds will do.

Best regards,

Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,

Yes, it's certainly good to have the adapter, but I use the Earpods 99% of the
time and I even bought a set of Lightning Earpods which I sometimes use with my
6S Plus when I don't have to charge it. Initially I did this because when they
first came out two years ago with the iPhone 7 I was curious whether they
sounded better than a 3.5mm set of headphones. Overall I would say there is
maybe a little bit better sound quality, but for me the adapter would only be
important for the odd time when I want to listen to music in the evening when I
don't want to disturb my wife and I want the best possible sound. For this I
have a set of high-end VMota headphones but as I said, 99% of the time I use
Earpods and while I can buy cheaper earbud style headsets, at $35 canadian I
think they are the best bang for the buck when it comes to sound quality, I
have the inline remote and all that and they also don't plug up my ears like
many others so I can listen to my audio book while I am walkig to work on the
right ear only and still hear everything around me.
Also, there are now other headsets available with Lightning port since as with
all Apple accessories manufacturers know where the money is.

Regards,
Sieghard

The good thing about a 3.5 adapter is that there are so many headphones
available.

Hi Carolyn,

No, you are correct, there is an adapter. However, the iPhone 7 and later also
comes with the Apple Earpods we are all used to and many of us like but these
Earpods have a Lightning plug at the end except for the 3.5mm plug and plug
directly into the Lightning port.
As some pointed out, one of the disadvantages is that if you often plug your
iPhone in to charge while using a headset then it requires the Belkin Rockstar
splitter. It plugs into the Lightning port but at the other end it has 2
Lightning ports and I think you can maybe also get one with a Lightning and a
3.5mm end. This allows y ou to plug your charging cable into one and the
Lightning Earpods into the other.
Of course if you have an iPhone 8 or later you can also use the wireless
charging feature to charge your phone while a Lightning headset is plugged in.
For me this would be the solution I would prefer, I would simply buy enough
charging pads to have them wherever I now have a cable, e.g. on my bedside
table, in the living room and my office and everytime I don't use my phone I
can just lay it down on the charging pad and it will charge. Yes, for now it
charges a bit slower so if I wanted to charge as much as possible in the
shortest time I'd have to use a cable, but the advantage of the wireless
charging is that often I put my phone on my desk at work, but I don't bother to
hook up the cable whereas if it were just lying there on a pad it would charge
and I can pick it up any time without having to disconnect the cable.

Regards,
Sieghard

You know, I use my 3.5 headphone a lot, if someone calls me and I am busy here
at the house. I just plug up, stick phone in pocket or pouch and keep on
changing linens, washing dishes or whatever. I keep a little pair of ear buds
in my purse. I had heard that the seven, and I assumed later models had
available for sale an adapter for the lightning cable that also had a 3.5
connection, so that one could be used. Am I mistaken about the adapter?

Carolyn

Yes, but it’s not like the 3.5mm headphone jack is coming back so whether he
gets a phone without one now or in a year won’t really make much of a
difference.

Good point, thought, Julian, about asking what the upgrade cost is to an iPhone
8, if it is $100 or even $200 (Mich is in Canada) then selling his iPhone 6
will probably cover most of that cost and at least then he has the ability to
use wireless charging should he ever want to use a headphone while the phone is
charging. I know there are the splitters from Belkin, but they cost as much as
a couple of wireless charging mats from Amazon.

Good point, I keep forgetting about Apple’s decision to remove the 3.5 plug.

One of the reasons, besides liking the size, why I will stick with my SE as
long as possible.

Hi Mitch,

I think the most important question you need to ask yourself is, can you live
without the 3.5 mm headphone jack. You will definitely lose that by going to
the seven. If you’re happy with the way things are, maybe you should just sit
it out for this year. If you feel like you want to upgrade, while this is not a
bad offer, I would personally ask how much more they would charge to go to the
eighth instead of the seven.

        Hi Tom,

This is all very good advice. I also advise my clients similarly.
Unless the new models have something that you absolutely must have, I would
stick with your iPhone 7 and wait till next year to see what Apple offers up. I
am currently using an iPhone 7 running the iOS 12 beta and it’s working just
fine.
