It's easy to figure out if the protective case is to blame, just take it off for a while and see if the SIM stays connected. Another step to trouble shoot this is to open the SIM tray, pull it out a bit and then push it back in, best turn the phone off, take the SIM out partially and put it back, then turn the phone on again. If all that doesn't help I would ask my provider for a new SIM first and only as a last resort I would take the phone to an Apple Store to see if the phone itself could be defective.
