I have identified the problem, 3D touch was enabled and set to sensitive
hence all the unwanted menus etc popping up everytime I moved my finger.
I've turned it off whilst I set up the phone. I may turn it back on at
some stage but I am not a fan of it for VIPs

each letter and it got set to touch typing I could see how this could seem
confusing since with touch typing al you have to do to type a letter is to find
it and then lift up your finger.
