Hi Richard. It is very easy to scan the sensor. Each person will most likely find their comfort method when scanning. I find it very simple to either bend my elbow and lift my arm somewhat. The top of the phone is placed near the sensor. I can usually get a scan with the front of the phone placed within 2 inches or so of the sensor. The distance can vary depending on what you are wearing. For example, if you are wearing a coat, sweater, sweat shirt, you will need to place your phone closer to the sensor. If the sensor is exposed or you are wearing thin clothing, the phone can be farther from the sensor. The phone will vibrate and give a suttle tone when the scan is successful. Most instances it only takes a couple of seconds. You can also turn on text-to-speech and the results will be spoken. If you miss the spoken results, you can then just swipe to read the results. It is very easy to apply the sensor to the back upper part of the arm. Applying the sensor is easier than removing it. Not saying that it is difficult to remove.
