Janet,
maybe you are missing the point. You can delete the old backups and keep only the latest one in the free ICloud space that Apple provides. Then you do not need to purchase additional space, so where do you get the idea that they are forcing you to do that?

Hi Sieghard,
I'm sorry to say I think you are missing the whole point here, and I stated what the issue was in my previous message. You think there is nothing wrong with Apple forcing people to purchase more iCloud storage, but I do. I just wonder how long will it be before others have to start purchasing more iCloud storage just in order to back up their phone, in case, one loses their phone, or if it breaks, and someone might not have the backup, that Apple advises people to do. Let's face it, Apple even advises people before downloading an update, be for sure to back up your phone.
Thank you though for your thoughts.
Janet

Hi Janet,

I am not sure why you feel this is such a big issue or unfair on the part of Apple. It is entirely up to you if you want to backup to iCloud or not. If you want to back up to a computer via iTunes or not back up at all then that is your choice, simply turn off iCloud Backup and it's done.

HI Sieghard,
Sieghard says: I assume Janet's problem is not because of backups but because other stuff is getting backed up to iCloud. Janet says: yes, it is coming from the backups. Why should I have to pay Apple even if it is only $0.99 cents a month just because of their backups, or because of the large updates Apple sends out? I should have the choice if I want to purchase more iCloud storage or not, not because I am being forced in to it. I do not have any photos, videos on my phone or on iCloud. I've went through iCloud storage and checked all the apps I want backed up, and there are only a few of them. I can see just how much storage the backups are taking up in iCloud. When I check iCloud, the message says: 4.1 gbs of 5gb used backups 83 percent dim, so this tells me most of my iCloud storage is being used by the backups, and this has been confirmed by Apple as well. One thing I can do is to turn off the audo back up each time I charge my phone though. Although, Apple recommends to back up each time the phone is plugged in. Go figure! I'm not happy about this at all, and I consider this to be very unfair by Apple! I'm sure Apple also knows this, when people back up, eventually, we all will have to start paying them for more iCloud storage! Can you imagine if all Apple users start paying even if it is $0.99 each month, how much more money that will be for Apple! $0.99 is not a big deal, it is the principal!
Sieghard, thank you for your opinions though, as it is greatly appreciated.
Janet

I would absolutely positively not turn off iCloud altogether on an iPhone and I would also not even turn off iCloud backups. I assume Janet's problem is not because of backups but because other stuff is getting backed up to iCloud. You get 5 Gb of free iCloud storage and after that you have to purchase more, 50 Gb cost only 99 Cents a month in the US, in Canada it's $1.35 CAD. Photos quickly can eat up your 5 Gb and videos do so even faster so you can always turn off iCloud Photo Library if that is not important to me.If you have more storage on Dropbox or OneDrive you can also enable Camera Roll on either one of these services and your pictures will get backed up there. It's a simple thing to go to Settings > Your Account (at the very top) and then iCloud and to go through all the individual categories and to turn off the ones you don't want and leave the ones you want on. Many apps use iCloud to sync content between iOS devices which are signed in to the same Apple ID and of course if you ever get a new iPhone or, hopefully this won't happen, you loose your iPhone, it is stolen or damaged beyond repair, having an iCloud backup and your Photos backed up to iCloud, OneDrive or Dropbox will be a life saver since all you have to do is to restore your new phone from your iCloud backup. Yes, you can still use iTunes and a PC to back up your phone to the computer and you can do what is called an encrypted backup which backs up also passwords and such, but iCloud backups nowadays are just as good and it's not like in the old days when a PC backup included all your apps and such. The backup includes the information as to which apps you have and also your home screen layout, but even if you restore from a PC your apps are redownloaded from the app store and not restored from the PC. As a comment I do think Apple is pretty stingy when it comes to the 5Gb of free iCloud Storage. Considering how much an iPhone costs and how little they charge for their 50 Gb, I think they could at least up the 5Gb free limit to 10 or 15 Gb or maybe include the 50 Gb storage as a value-added item when people subscribe to Apple Music or other services Apple offers. Sort of like Microsoft giving people who pay for Office 365 1 Tb of OneDrive storage. If you consider what an Office 365 subscription includes at a cost which is the same or slightly less as an individual Apple Music subscription, it's a real bargain.

Best regards,
Sieghard

On this topic of I?Cloud, is this something I will need to be worried about. I'm getting a 256 GB iPhone 8. I don't think I have anything to backup at this point. I use the regular gmail via the web for all my emails. I don't have outlook, thunderbird or any computer email client like that. I just never saw the need for it. I've been using my gmail set to basic HTML mode for years and it has worked fine. Thanks for any help. All these articles this list posts are proving very helpful.

When you buy your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, it comes with a set
storage capacity ranging from 16 to 256GB for iPhone, 16 to 512GB for
iPad, and 8 to 128GB for iPod touch. The music you buy, the apps you
download, the photos you take, and all of the other content that you
enjoy on your device uses its storage. And depending on the size of
your capacity and how much content you have, your device can fill up
and run out of storage. When your device is full, you can’t increase its storage. But you can free up space.

1. Go to Settings.
2. Tap General.
3. Tap [device] Storage or Storage & iCloud Usage.
You might see a list of recommendations for optimizing your device

Free up space on your device
You can make storage space available on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod

can remove content from your apps—like photos, music, and Podcasts—or
delete the apps that you're not using.
iCloud storage
When you set up iCloud, you automatically get 5GB of free storage. You
can use that storage space to back up your device and to keep all of

You can make room when you buy more iCloud storage or when you delete content.

HI All,
I’m having a serious problem with iCloud. I was getting messages from
Apple saying I either have less than 50 percent space left, then I
started getting messages from Apple saying I have less than 25 percent
of space. So, now when Apple sends out another update, I don’t even
have enough space to update. The apps I have on my phone is less than
1gig, so most of the space I have lost is due to the Apple updates,
and now Apple wants me to pay each month for more space. I’m not very
happy about this at all. I went to an Apple store several weeks ago,
and the Apple rep told me not to use iCloud for back up, but to use my pc to back up instead, as this is what he does.
The rep also told me each time my phone backs up, iCloud stores all
those back ups on my phone. If this is really the case, I think this
is very unfair of Apple, but I just can’t imagine this. Does anyone
know if this is true?
Thank you all.

Subject: How to Turn Off iCloud on iPhone

While most people use the feature all the time, you may want to turn
off iCloud on your iPhone. Doing that is pretty simple, but turning
off iCloud can have far-reaching implications for how you use your iPhone.
What iCloud Does When Turned On
The basic functions of the iCloud are pretty well known to most
people: it's used to keep data in sync across all devices that are
signed into the same iCloud account. That means that if you add a
contact, update your calendar, or do any number of other things on
your iPhone, that change will be automatically applied to your other
iPhones, iPads, Macs, and other Apple devices.
But iCloud does a lot more than that, too. You can also use it to back
up data from your devices to the cloud, to use Find My iPhone to track
lost or stolen devices, to upload photos to your public Photo Stream,
and to share your Safari usernames and passwords across devices, among other things.
Signing into iCloud also signs you into other Apple services and
feature, like FaceTime, iMessage, Game Center, and Siri Shortcuts, too.
Why You Might Want to Turn Off iCloud
Those all sound like pretty important features to use with your
iPhone, right? They are, but you still might want to turn them off.
For instance, you might not want to back up your iPhone data to iCloud
or share your photos with the world. You might also want to prevent
data from syncing from your iPhone to other devices. We don't
recommend turning off iCloud — it has too many useful features, most
importantly Find My iPhone — but there are good reasons to do it in some cases.
How to Turn Off iCloud on iPhone
So, now that you know what turning off iCloud involves, just follow
these steps to do it. These instructions apply to devices running iOS
10.3 or
higher:
1. Tap the Settings app to open it.
2. Tap your name at the top of the Settings screen.
3. Scroll to the bottom of the screen. Tap Sign Out.
4. Enter your Apple ID when prompted and then tap Turn Off. This turns
off Find My iPhone, which you have to do before you turn off iCloud.
5. Next, choose what data you want to keep a copy of on this iPhone.
Move the slider to on/green for Calendars, Contacts, Keychain, Safari,
and/or Stocks.
6. After this, tap Sign Out in the top right corner.
7. Tap Sign Out one more time and you'll finally be signed out of iCloud.
Tip: Remember, signing out of iCloud also signs you out of Find My
iPhone, FaceTime, and iMessage. You can turn on FaceTime and iMessage
individually, in those apps, and use a phone number with them instead
of your iCloud account. Find My iPhone requires iCloud be turned on.
How to Turn Off iCloud on iPhone on iOS 10.2 or Earlier The steps for
turning off iCloud in iOS 10.2 or earlier are a bit
different:
1. Tap Settings.
2. Tap iCloud.
3. Tap Sign Out.
4. In the pop-up, tap Delete from My iPhone.
5. Choose the data you want to keep a copy of on your iPhone.
6. Enter your Apple ID when prompted.
7. Tap Turn Off to disable iCloud.
How to Turn off Individual iCloud Features on iPhone What if you don't
want to turn off all of iCloud, but just a few features?
You can do that, too, by following these steps:
1. Tap Settings.
2. On iOS 10.3 or higher, tap your name. On iOS 10.2 or lower, skip
this step.
3. Tap iCloud.
4. On the screen that lists all of the iCloud features, disable the
ones you don't want to use by moving their sliders to off/white.
5. For some features, such as Photos, you'll need to tap the menus to
reveal another screen's worth of options. Move sliders there to
off/white to disable them as well.
