If you read the link I posted on the feature, you'll see that youriPhone is supposed to learn your charging habits over time. I'm justguessing here, but based on what I read, if you only plug your phone inover night then you'll probably still get a full charge when you plug itin in the evening, but if you plug it in during the day then you'll justget charged up to 80% since your phone will think it'll see a chargerthat evening. As with most things on your iPhone, I would assume youcould toggle it on or off, and in fact, I think I read this feature willbe off to start with and you'll need to turn it on.

I'm not sure why they settled on 80%, but the Battery Universityarticle does talk about research done by Tesla, so it may be theresult of some experimentation. There may also be some chemistry thatexplains this. I just don't know.

    Note that it doesn't say anything about not charging your phone
    daily. It sounds to me like this feature will try to help with
    more frequent shallow charging.

    Where did you read that? I guess you can find somebody saying
    this online somewhere just as  you can find many who say
    leaving your phone plugged in makes no difference, once the
    battery is fully charged it will turn off charging which is
    indicated by the “100%, On AC Power” when you look at your
    battery indicator.

    It is actually not recommended to charge overnight.

    For that reason, Apple has implemented Optimized battery
    charging feature. This can be found inside settings, battery,
    battery health. The feature can then be changed.

    Did they introduce the new smart charging with the latest IOS
    update? Last night I put my IPhone X on the charging pad as
    always. However, it only charged to 80% and stopped. I returned
    it to the pad but it never went to 100%.

    I don’t understand why this feature would be advantageous since
    I have heard over and over that it is not possible to
    over-charge your IPhone.
