If he doesn't pick it up soon enough, of course, it then would go to VoiceMail. Sometimes, I leave my phone by my chair in the living room. Then I'm back here at the computer. Phone rings. I run. If I don't make it in time, the call goes to VoiceMail.

It sounds like it is on 30 seconds. Also, if he has it near his head, or his hand covering the upper half of the phone, the screen will not respond due to the proximity sensor. It should go to speaker phone if he either pulls it away from his head or passes his hand over the upper half of the phone. Then, he should be able to access the keypad. As for it going to voice mail when he picks it up, he must be pressing the side switch or something. I've never had that happen on any iPhone. Apple Accessibility has a UK number that I sent out a while back, if needed, I'll find it and send again if that would help. Due to the current virus situation here in the UK we cannot get together for me to help him get used to it. There are two issues with his Phone App that I have not experienced with all my iPhones. Firstly, when on a call his SE appears to lock itself. It does not switch between speaker phone and normal operation when moved to and from his ear. When on speaker phone, he has no VoiceOver feedback so cannot find or activate the End Call button or enter digits on the phone’s keypad. It appears that the device locks itself when on a call as pressing the Home button VoiceOver is restored and he can use other apps and so on while on a call. The other issue is that if he lifts his phone off a table when it rings to answer it the call is sent to his voice mail. Raise To Wake is disabled. Any suggestions welcome.
