It's the voice, not the screen-reader, that mostly determines how a word is
pronounced. (The voice's speech dictionary is 'hard-wired'.) So, one
solution to a mispronunciation issue is to instead use an alternative voice
which will often speak the word correctly. (This is an over-extensive
solution, since the number of mispronounced words (these days) is relatively
small, by any good-quality voice.) Besides, each voice has the accent of the
country from which its speaker hails: and, add to this, that not all
possible words were spoken by the human whose speech samples were recorded
for the particular voice. So the computer program gives its best guess based
on algorithms across and between the speech samples, how a new or unrecorded
word should be spoken by that voice. Thus, also, 'artifacts' are introduced
into the speech which don't or never would occur in natural human speech:
and when a word is misspoken by the computer's voice, you have to go to
considerable lengths to make it sound like the word you're used to.

I tried this, and it sounds right with JAWS on my computer:
Peese
P e e s e like cheese. Now, you'd think peese would sound like cheese or
peas, but it sounds like peace.

How are you spelling the substitution for 'peace'? Does 'piece' come out the
same way? Try peess?

Subject: Pronunciation of a word
Hi, all,
I'm sorry if this has been covered, but this is driving me batty.
When I hear the word "peace" on my iPhone, it is always pronounced "peas."
Now, it doesn't matter if I try to change the pronunciation in the correct
place in Settings. No matter what I do, and I have tried many, many things,
it always gives me the same outcome. I'm using the Alison voice if that
matters. Just drives me nuts. When I hear "Lord, please give me peace," I
don't want him to give me a scoop of veggies, so does anyone have any ideas
here?
TIA,
Karen
