Christine, I’m taking spanish on duolingo as well. What I did was install the spanish keyboard on the iPhone. Now whenever spanish is required for entry, the phone shows the spanish keyboard rather than the english one. If you are entering on the onscreen keyboard, I believe you still have to use the hold and slide method that others have described. However, if you are using a bluetooth keyboard. There are dedicated keys for entering accents and the n with tilda.
The n tilde is the key to the right of the semicolon and the acute accent is the next key to the right of that one.
