If I get mine off, I just put it on the wireless charger to turn it on - a la suggestion from guy at Apple Accessibility.

Another way to see if your screen is on is by trying the mute button on the left side of the phone If it says nothing when you push it toward the back of the phone you know the phone is not on. The mute mute button is the indented switch on the left side of the phone at the top that you can move toward the back of the phone and then toward the front of the phone. Your second question was the re-boot that you want to avoid unless absolutely necessary. It is push and release the volume up button, then volume down button and then push and hold the side button on the right of the phone. Hope this helps.
