Yes, they are just packing material.

I would save them in the original box in case you have to ship the Airpods
Max back for some reason.

Notice, the reason they sound so tinny is that you are blocking the speaker
with the solid plastic back of those protective covers.

And, they are lose, not going to give you the noise cancelation you get with
the foam pads, which are extremely comfortable and amazingly good sound
blockers.

  Hello all:

I believe that the hard plastic shells referenced in the original message are
just packing materials that are meant to protect the ear pads during shipping.
They should be removed and discarded. Thus, the proper Airpods Max setup
consists of the aluminum earcups to which the ear pads are attached; nothing
additional goes over the ear pads. In other words, when wearing the headphones,
the soft foam of the ear cushions should be in contact with your head. I hope
that this clarifies the situation.

I am not laughing. And yes I think that wearing the airpods max without the
padded ear piece would be very uncomfortable. So, they are meant to be worn
with the padded ear pieces.

I have what is probably a dumb question, but i'll ask it because otherwise i
think I will go crazy.

On each ear piece is a soft foam material and a hard plastic shell. Both the
foam and the shell are detachable. My question is, is the hard plastic shell
meant to be worn? I ask because when I wear the headset with the hard plastic
shell attached. the audio has a tinny quality and my ears really start to hurt
within 30 minutes or so. So i am wondering if this hard plastic shell is meant
to be worn, or just to be used when the headset is stored. If you want to
laugh, please do it either before or after you answer this message.
