I just tried it without using the Add Contacts button and it worked for me just the same picking people from the results which showed up. I first typed part of a name and then when I located the person I double tapped the name and it was inserted as the first recipient. I then typed the next name, in this case "Alex" and since I have 3 or 4 people in my contacts once again I touched the screen on the upper half of the phone and then simply moved my finger (you can also flick right or left) until I found the person and again double tapped, now I had two recipients. I repeated with a third in the same way, then I was able to flick right to the edit field where I could type my message. Sorry, but I'm not sure what other way there would be to start a group message except maybe for asking SIRI to send a message and to then name all the people you want to send it to.
