Yes, the custom notifications at the very bottom is important. In my case it said that alerts were off. When I turned them on, it showed my sound choice. What then was happening with me was that when a message came through, I would get a verbal notification Reading the first line, which I didn’t like and that I had never had happen before, so, in comparing my set up with an older device, I saw that the updated one had banners showing up in the notifications area, as opposed to on the older device, just sounds and badges, so, when I turned off banners, everything was the way I wanted.
