You only need the phone near by if you are using a service on the watch that requires internet access / connectivity.
Otherwise the watch works fine for telling time Exercise workouts, And you can even play music through airpods etc from it directly But if you wanted to make a phone call or read email then you need the phone close, This is of course if you are usin the GPS watch, If you have the cellular watch then all services I believe are available.
