I have the same experience Mark does on a Apple Watch SE running a WatchOS 8.4 beta. My work around is to hit the crown and then bring up the notifications by flicking down with two fingers or tapping on the you have unread notifications icon on the watch face. I'd like to figure this out, and I'm wondering if there's some setting I need to change that I have stumbled over yet.
