Karen, I got out in afternoon sunshine, did not have a bit of trouble. The phone will give instructions, move head this way and that way, kind of like, when entering a fingerprint one, how it had you keep entering a finger print again and again.
They say you don't have to be in bright sun, but I can tell you that, for me, it worked, so that is what I would do again with a new phone. Also, in settings, there is a setting inside Accessibility or somewhere, where you turn off Full Attention, although it should be off with Voiceover on.
