Sunlight is absolutely not required. Maybe it is better if there is normal light whether daylight or from a lamp/ceiling light when you first set it up, but Apple really has gotten this right and it is not rocket science. But there will always be some people who have difficulties with it just as there were people who never got Touch Id to work reliably. I remember many years ago when Touch I d first came out that there was a lady on the Viphone list, I believe her first name was Rose, who very seriously believe that because she was a typist or transcriptionist all her life that she had worn off her finger prints and that is why Touch Id did not work for her. Anyways, I can definitely see how Touch Id would be problematic for people who do a lot of manual labour and often have dirty fingers like maybe mechanics, farmers, carpenters and so on. As I said before, it has been my own experience that Touch Id was always problematic if I had a bunch of small scrapes or cuts on my fingers from woodworking and of course good old Titebond wood glue let alone Lepage construction adhesive on my fingers would render it useless for a couple of days until it wore off. Titebond at least can easily be washed off with warm water, the other stuff requires paint thinner. Then of course there is the fact that for those of us who live in a colder climate gloves are a fact of live for 4 or 5 months out of the year and in all these scenarios Face Id is just much superior, easier and more reliable.

Since the guy at Wal-Mart could not do it, I wondered at the time, if light had something to do with it. Now, I simply do not know why we could not get it done at Wal-Mart. -----Original Message----- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Arnold Schmidt Sent: Sunday, September 4, 2022 6:02 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Face ID hit or miss I wonder if where one is when they initially set up face ID would make a diference? I know it is not supposed to make that much of a difference, but I do wonder. When I get a modern phone and want to set up face ID, I will go outside, not in direct sunlight, but using outside light. Some people seem to have little problem using it, others just can't seem to make it work consistently. Maybe it is like those ocr programs, that only can do as well as the scan they are given. Maybe some who have a problem with it gave their phone a not so good scan of their face to start with. I know voice over said it was okay, but maybe a better scan would work better. This is just speculation on my part, I don't have a modern phone with which to experiment. One thing that has helped me is to also set up the alternate face ID so that essentially, it has two copies of my face. I know people say that it should not matter if you are in a light or dark environment, but in my very dark bedroom, it rarely recognizes my face. it certainly has gotten a lot better with practice, but I don’t have quite the luck that Sieghard has had, despite setting mine up per the instructions given on this list about six months ago. Face Id is actually more secure than Touch Id and it works for me I would say about 96 or 98% of the time. I do have th attention feature turned off I should add, it makes it maybe slightly less secure, but both my eyes are prosthetic and I often do not have them in at night. I have no issue with Face I d with the attention feature enabled, but it will not work if it doesn't see the eyes whereas it works just fine even in absolute darkness with that feature disabled.. Sometimes, skin oils can cause interference, if you hold the phone up to your ear while on a call. * Note that, on device reboot, you will certainly need to enter your pin again. If none of these things help, I would probably go back to where you bought it, or reach out to Apple, as it may be a hardware issue. I just bought an iPhone 13 mini and have set up Face ID with no difficulty; however, it seems that it'll work two or three times and then will require me to use my pass code to unlock my phone. I am getting very tempted to put my SIM card back in my SE 20 lol. It's much easier to just reach over and unlock it with my finger than to pick up my mini and hope I can get it to unlock without having to type in my pass code. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
