Well, moving the microphone further back may help for the distortion too. But, if you know someone with aa 12, 13, or now 14 pro, perhaps they could let you record something with their phone. Especially with the Camera Video mode since it will record in stereo and you may find you get a much better sound. I don't know if the XS utilizes the stereo mic or even if it has them. But, I know their processing is much better. Though I do not know if you can turn off the Apple filters on the mic.
