You still have to use iTunes if you want to transfer music from your computer to your iPhone. My solution for many years has been to use Apple Music, yes, it costs me a few Bucks each months, but I have what by now I think are 90 Million songs or something like that at my fingertip and I can listen to what I want and if you want to have stuff available for offline listening you can download it to your device and as long as your apple Music subscription is active you can play it. I used to be able to buy 5 or 6 CD's for what Apple Music costs me each year.
