I use IMAP on my Iphone and POP on my PC.
If my outlook is closed, I read the mail on my iPhone, replying and deleting
as I wish. Then when I get home and turn on my PC, it downloads the mail and
wipes the messages off of my iPhone.

I haven't used it that way, but my understanding is you can use both IMAP
and POP simultaneously with Gmail.
