Yes, I have different text tones for various groups of people. And yes, I think you are right, Jenn, in that if a string of messages is open, then you just get a blip rather than a ring tone when the person you are texting responds.
However, when I am using some apps, like Duo Lingo, it does seem that messages come in without a ring tone alert. Perhaps this is deliberate, in order not to interrupt, but I hadn’t noticed this happening before.
