I too like Google Maps and use it the most when navigating for a driver.
What I really like about it over Apple Maps is that you can do a route
walk-through quite easily.
But, it is only a turn-by-turn program, it doesn't tell you about the streets
you are crossing, etc. That is where something like GoodMaps Outdoors, or some
of the other GPS apps with blindness in mind are helpful.
BlindSquare does a nice job of this, but it is $39.99. And the BlindSquare
database for points of interest may not be updated as often, though I think
that will change in time.

Remember, GoodMaps Outdoors is the same as the Sendero GPS only free instead of
a few hundred dollars that it had cost when it first came out and later a
couple hundred when AIRA bought it. Then, they basically gave it to the APH
connected GoodMaps group where Mike May is now working. Mike had been the
founder of Sendero and prime mover behind Sendero GPS and what came before. He
is the true pioneer in navigation systems for the blind.

Nearby Explorer was definitely the best GPS app for getting location
information. It’s a shame that development of that app was discontinued. I
would say the two best apps for that now are Blindsquare and Good Maps
Outdoors. For navigation I think Google Maps is one of the best choices.
