I’ve got an iPhone 12 Pro at the moment so definitely thinking of getting a new phone very soon. I would like to get the 16 pro because I would like to have LIDar And more memory and just generally better processing power and battery. I’m looking forward to seeing how the spatial audio features will work on the new 16 Pro, but I am very disappointed that you can only record spatial audio for videos as I would’ve loved to have done this with just plain audio recordings. It seems to me that Apple and other tech companies always seem to prioritize videos and camera and other visual features over anything that would solely be useful for audio. I’m also surprised that the new audio mixing features in Voice Memos are only available on the pro phones and seem to have some sort of link to Apple Intelligence, because this seems strange to have to use AI to do this when the features that they mentioned seem not to require it.

Oh, I totally get you, and I would be in the mindset you are if it weren’t for my phone right now that is still having issues. I had it checked out and even changed phone carriers, but my phone still does very strange things, freezes, and even cuts out on phone calls when I’m in a solid place.

I can technically trade it in if I want, and if I did that, I might just go for the 16 pro, but I don’t want to make any hasty decisions yet. I’m just tired of a long time of fiddling with this phone, having others look at it, and it still not acting quite right.

We will see. But yes, I would generally agree with your statements.

Jim, sound and recording may be a deciding factor for some especially if you are playing music as this was a specific example shown during the presentation. For me recordings typically go as far as the occasional voice memo and I doubt the capabilities of the Pro series phones is going to make a difference there. Having said all that it is probably more likely that I would buy a Pro phone since the extra cost is something I can afford without having to think about it too much, but we’ll see, I am not in a particular hurry to preorder this Friday or to try and buy at a store a week later. Unless you run the iOS 18.1 Beta, Apple Intelligence is a very small deciding factor right now since we’ll only start seeing it in October when iOS 18.1 is officially released and much of it will stretch to iOS 18.2 in January and 18.3 in March and probably even beyond that. There is definitely an argument to be made for waiting until the iPhone 17 next year but of course thi s all depends on what one has now. If I had anything like an iPhone 12 or older I wouldn’t even think twice. I currently have an iPhone 13 Pro which is an excellent phone and I bought it not in the release year of 2021, but a year later in December of 2022. I’ll see what the reviews say once a significant number of people have an iPhone 16 or 16 Pro and also check what I hear from those on the Viphone list who are going to jump onto it right away. I do take pictures with my phone and I think I’d find the new capture button handy, I’d also love to have an iPhone with a USB-C connector so I’m another major device closer to having only USB-C devices and I know for sure that I would probably really use and enjoy what Apple Intelligence has to offer once those features are here.

Hi Sieghard,

I believe a blind person might want the pros for the sound and recording capabilities though.

Also, I don’t know, but from what I gathered, the 16 pro phones will have LiDAR.

I am sure there are a number of details which weren’t covered in the keynote, but simply based on what was said there definitely seems to be less of a reason for a blind person to buy an iPhone Pro or Pro Max as opposed to the regular iPhone 16 or 16 Plus. One thing I am curious about is whether LiDAR has made it to the regular iPhone 16 yet or if that is still a 16 Pro/Pro Max only feature, but many of the other differences with pictures and videos is possibly not as bog of a deal for a blind/visually impaired user and both phones now have the action and capture buttons. Seems like for a few years Apple really pushed the Pro phones with the next genration chip whereas the regular phones kept the previous year’s chip, this year the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus also have the new A18 chip and while the Pro models have an A18 Pro chip which is even faster, I wonder  if that is really worth the extra money.

Take care,

Sieghard
