Again, I am just trying to picture how this works. You would need to know
where the sign was in order to point your phone correctly, right? Are you
running a certain app when using LIDAR to make this work? Same question with
moving forward in lines.

I also use it for signs in unfamiliar places as well as things like moving in
lines and such.
I like it pretty well.

It is most useful in the Magnifier detection mode where it can detect dorrs,
people, and I believe text, though other scanning apps do a better and more
direct job with text.
Some people find the door detection helpful when they are trying to find a door
in a building with which they are not familiar.

A couple apps have tried to use it for objects like Seeing AI and I think the
free Super Sense Lidar, but they are not great.
It is also supposed to help with taking better pictures in low light situations.

I have not yet listened to Jonathan Mosen's podcast that apparently mentions
some expanded features coming in iOS 18. I hope to have time to do that in the
next day or so.

I bought the 13 pro when it came out in hopes LIDAR would be very useful. It
hasn't been that useful for me, but I don't tend to go to unfamiliar places
much either.

Can you give some examples of how you use LIDAR? I am just curious about its
practical uses. I currently have an iPhone 13 Mini, and am just wondering how
useful it would be to have a phone with this capability.

That makes my decision easier. While I don't use LiDAR every day, I do find it
helpful enough that I won't buy another phone without it. From what Jonathan
Mosen said in the Living Blindfully episode on iOS 18, the LiDAR will have more
capabilities than ever, so I would probably find myself using it more often.

I listened to the Apple Keynote and also listened to the Living Blindfully
podcast with Jonathan Mohsen. His daughter looked up the specs on the website
and mentioned that lidar was not included in the 16 models other than the pro.

Oh, I totally get you, and I would be in the mindset you are if it weren't
for my phone right now that is still having issues. I had it checked out and
even changed phone carriers, but my phone still does very strange things,
freezes, and even cuts out on phone calls when I'm in a solid place.
I can technically trade it in if I want, and if I did that, I might just go
for the 16 pro, but I don't want to make any hasty decisions yet. I'm just
tired of a long time of fiddling with this phone, having others look at it, and
it still not acting quite right.
We will see. But yes, I would generally agree with your statements.

Jim, sound and recording may be a deciding factor for some especially if you
are playing music as this was a specific example shown during the presentation.
For me recordings typically go as far as the occasional voice memo and I doubt
the capabilities of the Pro series phones is going to make a difference there.
Having said all that it is probably more likely that I would buy a Pro phone
since the extra cost is something I can afford without having to think about it
too much, but we'll see, I am not in a particular hurry to preorder this Friday
or to try and buy at a store a week later. Unless you run the iOS 18.1 Beta,
Apple Intelligence is a very small deciding factor right now since we'll only
start seeing it in October when iOS 18.1 is officially released and much of it
will stretch to iOS 18.2 in January and 18.3 in March and probably even beyond
that. There is definitely an argument to be made for waiting until the iPhone
17 next year but of course thi s all depends on what one has now. If I had
anything like an iPhone 12 or older I wouldn't even think twice. I currently
have an iPhone 13 Pro which is an excellent phone and I bought it not in the
release year of 2021, but a year later in December of 2022. I'll see what the
reviews say once a significant number of people have an iPhone 16 or 16 Pro and
also check what I hear from those on the Viphone list who are going to jump
onto it right away. I do take pictures with my phone and I think I'd find the
new capture button handy, I'd also love to have an iPhone with a USB-C
connector so I'm another major device closer to having only USB-C devices and I
know for sure that I would probably really use and enjoy what Apple
Intelligence has to offer once those features are here.
