It is “when speaking” not “when I am talking”.
The meaning of the 3 choices are:
Off – quite obvious, audio ducking is off and volume of other media or calls is
never lowered.
Always – audio ducking is always on which means any media like music or audio
books or any calls are always lowered by the percentage you set no matter if
Voiceover is speaking or not. I m not sure why such a setting is really useful
When speaking – this means if you listen to music, an audio book or receive a
call, it is always at regular volume unless you do something on the phone which
causes Voiceover to speak. As soon as that happens, e.g. you touch the screen
to maybe check a notification, then if music or an audio book is playing, the
volume of that is lowered so it’s easier to hear Voiceover and as Richard
already said, you can adjust the amount by which the other audio is reduced in
the ducking amount. I have mine set to 80%, but everybody has to play around
with that and decide for themselves how they like it. Obviously, the lower the
percentage you select, the less the other autio is reduced and if you set it to
100% (it may only go to 98% , can’t remember), then you basically don’t hear
the other audio at all any more when you use the phone and Voiceover is
speaking.

Janet’s issue seems to be quite isolated, she said she knows another person
with a 14 Pro who has the same problem, but it’s certainly not something I have
seen come up on the list and where 20 people agree that they also have this
issue.
I agree that maybe a complete reset of the iPhone and setting up as a new
device is the way to go, it’s quite a bit of work depending on how many apps
you have and if you have a lot of apps for home automation and such which often
you have to then set up new. If you don’t, then it’s not such a big deal.

Richard,

The only options I get from the Audio Ducking is when I am talking, never, and
off.
I selected the off option.
I read the news last night when I went to bed, and I didn’t have the problem
with the sound volume going higher or lower, it sounded great!
So far, I think by changing the Audio Ducking, could have very well corrected
the sound volume.
What a relief that was, but I want to stress it is fine now, so far.
I will do some more listening later to be for sure.

Kindly,

Janet.

Subject: Re: Volume On An iPhone 16 Pro Question Please.

audio ducking has nothing to do with when you are talking, it is about when
VoiceOver is speaking.
There are three settings for audio ducking.
And, there is an item called Ducking amount that is also something you can put
in the rotor.
The higher the ducking amount, the more it will reduce the audio of music,
audio books, etc.
So if audio ducking is set to always on, the volume will fluctuate based on the
ducking amount. The same if it is set to while speaking, which is VoiceOver
speaking...
If audio ducking is off, then the volume between VoiceOver and whatever you are
listening to will not change.

Janet, if audio ducking isn't in the rotor it can be added by going to
accessibility, voiceover, rotor options & selecting Audio Ducking. Apple should
know about this because the problem was reported several months ago. It doesn't
sound promising that the audio ducking bug will be squashed with the upcoming
release of the big IOS release later this year, being Apple has labeled the
problem as normal behavior.

Janet, Turn Audio Ducking to Always off. This will solve the volume problem.
The audioducking bug has been around for at least 2 IOS 18 updates.

Hello Richard,

I have the volume set to 100 percent, and the change with buttons set to off.
I figure if I have the volume set to 100 percent I can always change that with
the buttons, depending on where I am, for an example, when I am outside, I need
the volume louder so I can hear what the phone is saying, but when I’m home or
in the doctor’s office I don’t need it that loud, so I can use the volume down
or up buttons.
But, I am thinking this issue with the volume I am currently having shouldn’t
have anything to do with the volume automatically getting louder and then
automatically getting lower.
This is driving me nuts though!

Kindly,

Janet.

What sound level do yd you have your sounds set to under settings, Sounds &
Haptics?
Do you have change with buttons off?
I always keep change with buttons off so changing the volume with the buttons
doesn't effect the ringer and alerts volume.

Have you adjusted the volume while Siri is speaking?
Sometimes, I notice after using Siri the overall volume seems louder.
Ask Siri something like what is the forecast for the next 7 days and while it
is answering, adjust the volume to where you want it.
That usually keeps it fairly constant.

Subject: Volume On An iPhone 16 Pro Question Please.

Hello Everyone,

Since I bought my phone 16 Pro in December of 2024, I’ve had this strange issue
with the volume that is driving me nuts.
When I am reading the Apple News or any other news app I have on my phone, or
even if I am in one of my Apple Music Play List, but no matter which app I am
reading this exact same issue comes up.
The problem is the volume gets louder and louder, and keeps getting louder, and
then I have to turn the volume down as I don’t need it or like it that loud,
Then the volume will go lower and lower until I can’t barely hear anything I am
reading on my phone.
Needless to say I can’t stand this issue.
I know I should have called Apple about this before, but I’ve been very busy
doing other things, but this is really getting nerve recking!
So, I just thought I would ask here before I call Apple.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Kindly,

Janet.
