Until enough people complain to Apple, VoiceOver will default to focusing on the time counter. Until that happens, the only solution is to touch anywhere else on the screen to focus VoiceOver on a different spot on the screen, which as Andy said, is as easy as swiping right once and not touching the screen where the counter is again.
