Michael,

That's the answer, even without the date. If YouTube updated, YouTube is where
the change came from.

Something else worth knowing. A member on one of the other lists is seeing the
same fault on iOS 26, going back to Tuesday. If it is happening on 26 and on
27, the iOS version is not what did this. That puts the change in the YouTube
app, not on your phone.

Which means two things. Nothing you set caused it, so there is no VoiceOver
setting to go hunting for. And no iOS update is going to undo it either. It
gets fixed when YouTube fixes it.

In the meantime, the collapse the player route you were given is the right
workaround. It works because it stops depending on the overlay coming back at
all. You reach the Skip button from the minimized player instead, so the fade
is out of the loop.

Honestly I don't remember. Though I do remember that there was an update to
youtube. Not exactly when though.

Two different things are getting tangled together here, and that is why the
swipe finds nothing.

Hearing that the ad can now be skipped tells you the ad has reached the point
where skipping is allowed. It does not tell you the Skip control is on screen
at that moment. The Skip button lives in the player's own control overlay, and
that overlay fades itself out while a video is running. Once it has faded,
there is no Skip button to swipe to, because it is not on screen at all.

That is also why Screen Recognition did nothing for you, and your test there
is worth more than it looks. Screen Recognition works on what is actually drawn
on the screen. If the controls have faded out, there is nothing drawn for it to
find, so it has nothing to hand you. A negative result like that is still an
answer.

So the order matters. Get the player controls back up first, then go looking
for Skip. I am not going to guess the exact gesture for bringing the controls
back on 27, because I would rather not send you hunting for something I have
not confirmed on that release myself. Somebody here will have it exact.

One more thing worth checking, since you say this started two or three days
ago. When a fault starts the same week something changed, the change is the
first suspect, and the YouTube app moves its player controls around far more
often than iOS does.

Did YouTube update itself on your phone around the time this started?

    Hello Listers,

For the past 2 or 3 day's I have been experiencing voice over and youtube
interesting behavior. When It comes to skipping youtube ads. I start
watching a video, then an ad pops up. I wait untill I hear voice over say ad
can now be skipped. How ever when I start swiping to skip the ad the skip
button is not shown. I have even tried turning on screen recognition, and
still nothing. I close the app and reload it again. I am running iOS 27.01,
on an iPhone 17e. Any one else experiencing this?
