Hi all. This is your friendly moderator with a friendly reminder about
hijacking threads. This is a no-no. I'll explain why now since this
message I'm responding to is a perfect example of why hijacking threads
is a no-no.
The original thread was about turning off notifications for all apps.
When I was out earlier, I saw this thread on my iPHone and thought it
contained 14 plus messages. Wow, I thought. This thread about
notifications really sparked an interesting conversation. Had I not been
interested in reading about turning off notifications, I might have
erased that thread with one swipe. That would have meant that I would
also have missed out on the hijacked thread talking about copying
contacts. Maybe I would have been interested in that and would have
wanted to respond. Likewise, some people who are interested in thread 1,
notifications, but not in thread 2, contact copying, might be annoyed
because as they are happily reading about thread 1, all of a sudden,
here comes thread 2.
This may not seem like a big deal to some, but it is a big deal to many.
Especially those members who read this list using the iPHone, iPad, or
iPod Touch. The same is true for those reading with an updated email
program which supports threads.
The below message is a clear thread hijack. Basically what the posted
did was read an existing message, press reply, then change the subject
completely, erase the older content, and write the message about copying
contacts. I don't know about you, but to me that seems like way more
work when compared to simply starting a new message, addressing it to
viphone@googlegroups.com, putting in an appropriate subject, and then
the message.
So, please, let's all take the time to start new discussions when they
have nothing to do with what we are currently reading. The discussion of
turning off notifications did not morph into copying contacts. DJ, I'm
not picking on you personally, but I am showing an example of a clear
hijacked thread. In the past I've written to individuals about it
because I believe in doing list moderation off list to avoid cluttering
the list with moderator notes, but today I'm viewing hijacked threads as
equally annoying as one liner thank you messages.
If anyone has something to add to my moderator's message, please respond
privately.

I have many contacts on my phone which I would like to duplicate on my
wife's iPad. She has her own Apple ID but we don't want to have to type
all of those contacts' information in one by one. Have any of you found
a way to simply copy the whole list including all data to another user?
I'm searching the web for this info but so far I haven't been successful.
Thanks,
DJ
