Hi Alan,

I can't speak for anything that goes back a while, I had my first iPod Touch
in 2009, then my iPhone 4 in 2010 and 4S in 2011. The short of it is that
unless you jailbreak you cannot transfer anything to your iPhone simply by
connecting it to a PC and have it recognized as a mass storage device. One
exception is photos, you can copy them off your iPhone or delete them on
your iPhone that way. If you have pictures on your phone, it will show up in
Windows (under Computer) and you can access your pictures. However, music,
ringtones, text files/notes etc. have to be copied using iTunes or you can
get stuff onto your device with apps like Dropbox, Skydrive, Phone Drive and
about 3,000 other apps which all claim that they allow you to use your
iPhone like a USB drive. Of course I am exaggerating, but there are a lot of
apps like that, Tonido, File App Pro etc. The thing is, though, that it
still really isn't like a USB drive because you can only view these files
from said app and most of these apps then have built-in document
readers/editors, music players, PDF viewers etc.

Regards,

Sieghard

Subject: Configuring iPhone 5 as External Device when Computer Connected

I know I'm thinking back a few years ago when I had more sight and was using
an iPod, but I seem to recall being able to set it so Windows recognized it
as an external USB device for transferring files to it, etc. Is it possible
to do this with the newer iPhones? I scoured the various settings in iTunes
11 and couldn't come up with it. Can someone provide information on whether
this is possible and how to do it?

Or maybe there is no longer a reason for doing this and I'll listen to
arguments on that score too.

Thanks in advance.
