Hi Michelle, Take it to an Apple Store and get them to test it, it sounds to me that the proximity sensor is not working as it should disable the touch screen when the phone is to your ear and Voiceover should come through the earpiece until you take the phone away from your ear. Especially if you have not even put on a case this should work flawlessly. If indeed the proximity sensor is faulty I am sure Apple will give you a new phone.
