Hi, Since this gesture was suggested I have been using it and find it very nice.
One thing I have found that might help you is that your fingers do not need to be perfectly ligned up across the screen. As long as they are on the top half of the screen they can be somewhat diagonal. I like to read the oldest first because it makes it easier to follow the thread which is probably why Apple did it that way because with the gesture you can quickly go either way. Most people are waiting for a reply or a new message etc so I get it but I'm usually holding my iPhone going from top to bottom because it's easier to hold it that way and I can't always get all 4 fingers on the damn screen and I've not managed it yet and yet everybody insists it works. Maybe I should try it with the screen sideways.
